Manual Handling & Health Promotion Training

Manual handling training programs designed and run by Smart Health Training and Services work.  They create change in the way workers perform their day-to-day tasks, decreasing the potential of both overuse and overload injuries.  Our training programs increase awareness of how and why injuries occur and how workers can control and safely manage their daily tasks.  They achieve this by being relevant, task-specific, worksite-specific and workplace-specific.

Employing the latest in digital technology the programs are educational, practical and entertaining keeping the participant fully engaged as they learn how to create change in themselves and prevent potentially serious injuries.  Where possible, employees are individually videoed and their movement patterns analysed to identify potential injury risks.  Combined with experienced physiotherapists as presenters, this allows us to provide the optimum in training for your employees.

Most employees approach manual handling training programs as an obligation rather than an opportunity.  As physiotherapists, we approach these sessions as a chance to improve knowledge and awareness.  Our sessions are engaging, personalised and relevant.  We know this because participant feedback consistently reflects it.

Site visits prior to training programs allow the use of work-specific material.  Video analysis allows employees to take ownership of their own health.  Information on nutrition, hydration and day-to-day exercise prepare bodies more effectively for work.  Our manual handling programs leave your employees smarter, healthier and empowered.

Ergonomic Training & Seminars

One of the biggest injury risks in the workplace is sitting in front of a computer.  Poor workstation design and use can contribute to postural syndromes and repetitive strain injuries (RSIs).  We use the same principles embraced in our manual handling packages to help employees stay healthy at their desks.

The training session touches on nutrition & hydration, warm-up and stretching exercises, bending & reaching patterns and most importantly, effective workstation set-up.  Manual handling principles are related to office-based tasks, such as reaching under desks and lifting copying paper.  All of these principles are described from an anatomical and physiological point of view, so that employees start to understand their bodies, and can then take control of their own health.

Our manual handling programs invariably involve some video analysis practical work.  This involves setting up a basic manual handling task for every participant, then videoing their performance and looking back over how they move.  We’ve found that this is one of the keys to the success of manual handling training, as it makes all of the information much more personal.

Pilates Programs

Pilates has outlasted most of the ‘fad’ exercise systems of the past two decades for one simple reason – it works.  As Physiotherapists, we recognise the clear link between muscular instability and injury.  Pilates was initially developed to assist muscular stability in dancers, but through years of development, it is now accessible and user-friendly for everyone.  Smart Health is the host site for Polestar, one of the most respected Pilates schools in the World, and we were recently honoured as the best educator site in the country.  If your employees have the potential to improve their muscular core, we have the best people to help.

Behavioural Coaching

The effect of employee attitude on injury rates is well recognised across all industries.  As therapists, we always prefer to treat the cause of a problem rather than continually battling the symptoms.  Behavioural Coaching packages work on strategies to promote a safe and responsible approach to work throughout your organisation.  Rather than purely looking at movement, we explore employees’ motivations for their actions, promoting positive safety behaviour.
