What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that has in fact existed since 1920. Developed by German Born Joseph Pilates, it has been widely practiced in the United States and Europe, but did not arise in Australia until the early 1980s. Despite this, the vast amount of research that is now recognized world wide has been developed here in Australia.
Professor Paul Hodges from The University of Queensland has devoted the past 15 years to research and quantification of Core Stabilization (the sequenced contraction of muscle Transversis Abdominis in coordination with the pelvic floor and diaphragm). He has proven that the use of a Real Time Ultrasound (RTU) is an integral part of acquiring Transversis Abdominis isolation and therefore true and efficient Pilates evolved exercise.
Here at Smart Health we use the RTU as a prime assessment and reassessment tool. It provides the practitioner and client a precise visual cue to their core musculature.
In addition to achieving this isolation, the technique must then be transferred into dynamic functional exercise. Programs must be designed for the individual and reassessed/graduated on a session to session basis. All of our Pilates sessions are closely supervised by practitioners who have achieved high levels of qualification as recognized by the Pilates Alliance of Australasia.
Who is Pilates for?
The level of Pilates that is conducted here at Smart Health is suitable for everyone. Males and females, young and old, novice to elite level mover. It is essential that any newcomer to our Pilates Sessions undertake an assessment with the Real Time Ultrasound to ensure correct Transversis Abdominis sequencing and allowing your practitioner to design a program that will maximize your potential.
It is also important to understand that Pilates evolved exercise is beneficial to not only posture and abdominal control, but the quality and efficiency of the entire body. Efficiency of all functional movement will be acquired.
